    Hey!

    I would like to tell you a little more about my professional background and experience. I hope it helps you to understand more about not only the services I provide, but the way in which I conduct business.

    SEO Background

    My SEO career began in 2005 with a very large small business website design firm here in Jacksonville, FL. When I joined as a customer care representative, there really wasn’t much of an SEO strategy in place for their clients. I learned all I could about SEO and eventually became the company’s SEO expert.

    That position involved consulting to an internal team of SEO consultants on the latest and greatest SEO methods; as well as direct consulting to selected clients. Being that we literally had tens of thousands of small business clients, an internal team of more than 200 people and a CEO that had a thing for buying other large companies with large client bases; it would suffice to say that I gained a ton of SEO experience.

    I left that position to become a member of a small SEO team at a company that provided website design and SEO services to the hotel industry. I quickly proved my expertise and helped them re-create their SEO products to become more efficient internally, and more beneficial to their clients.

    I became the lead SEO for the team, and eventually the SEO manager for that department. When I left that position, I was responsible for a team of 3 SEOs and more than 250 hotel clients all over the world. As you can imagine, I again acquired a great deal of local SEO knowledge and experience.

    Today I provide my services as a freelance SEO to small businesses that need an affordable way to market their site online with my company, SEO Factor.

    Here’s the thing about SEO Factor. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of SEO agencies, other SEOs and thousands of small business owners. And the one thing that those agencies don’t offer those small business owners, it’s a customized solution. But think about it, they can’t.

  • A Link is a Link – Even NoFollows

    When we talk SEO with our clients or potential clients, the topic of link-building will undoubtedly come up. And this conversation always gets into “what is a good link.”

    There are plenty of other articles on what signifies a quality link (relevant website, high ranking pages, in-content links, etc.), but what a lot of people seem to throw in the mix is their disregard to attaining links on sites that place the “nofollow” tag on them.

    If you are unfamiliar with nofollow, it’s basically a tag a webmaster can place on a link to direct a search engine away from following it.

    This was originally designed for bloggers who wanted to control their comment spam from people/robots attempting to artificially increase inbound links to irrelevant, often illegible websites (think: Viagra and replica watches). The nofollow attribute eventually became a tool for SEOs to sculpt the link value flow on their own sites in an attempt to increase the value of each page while retaining the ability to link to other pages internally.

    So, by placing a nofollow attribute on a link, you are keeping the “link juice” from spreading to other pages/sites. Being that inbound links have such a determining factor on your search engine rankings, it became something of a turnoff for link-builders.

    But we don’t follow this same thought. If you think about it, links are supposed to provide more information on a topic, or point visitors to other sites that may be of use. If you set aside search engine rankings for a moment, and remember that the point is to increase traffic to your site, then there may be many sites out there from which a link would be of great value.

    So don’t discount an opportunity to gain a link from a site simply because it would be “nofollowed.” Before Google came along and we realized how important links were to our rankings, this is how we gianed traffic anyway.

    As long as the link is relevant and offers the searcher value in some way, we say get all the links you can. A qualified visitor from another website is just as important as that of a search engine.

    If you’re looking for a strong foundation on which to build your online marketing efforts or need help determining the next steps in your SEO campaign, then my SEO Audit is perfect for you. Let me conduct an extensive analysis of your site and its current online progress, as well as that of your competition. Then, I’ll provide you with a set of documents that will outline specific modifications to your site and link-building strategies.  

    The SEO audits I conduct are not the same as those you may find online. I’m not saying those online tools aren’t fun to play around with, but I provide a more comprehensive analysis of your site; and return to you specific, actionable steps based on years of SEO experience. You won’t get any “your title tags are too short” statements here. Instead, I’ll tell you exactly what I think about them, and exactly how I would change them were I your SEO.

    Competitive Analysis

    Just as I perform an analysis on your site, so too do I analyze the sites of your competitors. I’m looking for all the same things I did on yours, but making note to their strengths and weaknesses. This is important as it helps us to quickly identify and adapt methods that are working for them, while exploiting the areas in which they don’t have a presence.

    Competitive Link Analysis

    I also perform a detailed analysis of your competition’s link equity, again noting the same things I did when I looked at your site’s link metrics. This will help us to identify link opportunities, and out-perform the competition in a strategic manner.

    What You Get

    Once I’ve completed my analysis I’ll be handing you quite a bit of information. This will be a set of documents containing the information I’ve gathered, various metric reports and my suggested website modification and promotion efforts.

    The first thing I’ll call your attention to is the list of urgent action items. Sometimes I only find a few things that could really be hurting your site’s performance, sometimes I find items that are literally stopping the search engines in their tracks; or worse, causing a website ranking penalty. either way, I’ll note the things that simply can’t be skipped and give you a good set of instructions on fixing them.

    The Results of all my research

    I pull a lot of different information from a lot of different sources to help in building an SEO campaign. You’ll be getting a set of documents that are the direct result of various metrics concerning your SEO efforts. For example, during the competitive link analysis phase, I’ll create long lists of the links that point to your competition. As a part of the SEO Audit service, you’ll get all of the documents that helped create the foundation for my suggestions.

    Using all that information I found initially, I’ll provide you with the SEO Spreadsheet, a document that organizes the data into an easy-to-follow format. For example, the list of search terms that I suggest will be broken down in this document; separated by categories and prioritized based on the amount of competition and estimated search value. I also provide you with general expectations based on rank positioning, traffic and resulting conversion rates. Basically, the return on your investment.

    Similarly, the list of competitors’ links I find will be broken into types, number and value. This way we can create an effective and efficient link-building strategy.

    I’ll provide you with a general overview of your entire site’s analysis results, noting your strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. This analysis overview will also call your attention to larger action items as a part of the suggestions I make. For example, if you have a site but no blog, the overview analysis will contain my suggestion to start a blog, and help with the implementation.

    Page by Page Analysis and Suggested Modifications

    Depending on your type of audit, you’ll also receive an analysis on individual pages of your site, as well as specific modification suggestions. For example, you’ll get an exact list of the suggested titles for your site, as well as other on-page factors.

    Master SEO Strategy Document with Checklist

    Finally, you’ll get a master SEO strategy document and checklist. Depending on the needs of your audit, this may sometime be broken up into sections so as to easily be delegated to the appropriate departments.

    Phone Consultation to Review the Audit

    Once I’ve performed the SEO audit and gotten the results and suggestions to you, I’ll give you a while to look it over and then we’ll schedule a call to go over every part of the analysis and discuss my suggestions. This is also your time to ask specific questions and bounce ideas around, so it’s a real informative call.

    Generally, I say “give it a month,” but every audit is different and every client has different needs. I’ve performed audits in under a week, and a few that took just over 2 months.     What’s with the pricing?

    Due to the nature of SEO in general, I’ve listed my prices in a “starting at” format. The SEO audits I perform get pretty in depth sometimes, and continue to do so as more and more businesses implement online marketing efforts of their own (read: your competition). I have one aim, and that’s to provide you with the most efficient, effective strategy to provide real results.

    Every client is unique, and so too are my provided services and fees.

    I can tell that this is an important factor in any purchase, so I’ll give you a few examples so you can see the type of fees and turnaround time you’re looking at.

    Starter

    I recently provided an audit for a plumber (5 or so employees)  in a smaller town in TX (few hundred thousand). I charged him $800, and had an audit/strategy to him in about a week and a half. He had someone implement all of the priority items I listed, and around 80% of the rest before our call, so that consisted mostly of ‘link-building’ talk.

    In around 4 months he went from 0 Internet traffic to attributing 3 customers to the site (which resulted in around $500 in sales). After a year of working through his strategy and a few phone calls here and there (add a few hundred bucks to my fees), he now ranks on page one for the majority of his targeted search terms, and his website accounts for a large portion of his income.

    Professional

    I get a lot of these in a year’s time. Usually, this is the audit you would get if you provide a common service in a populated area (think lawyers in L.A.).  These usually range from $1200 – $1700, and are done inside a month, every time. For some reason these are also my clients with the highest implementation rate. They usually see the first set of what I consider “results” in about 3 – 5 months. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what even one conversion for an injury attorney in Los Angeles means to the bottom line.

    Small Business

    This is the audit you would get if you were targeting the nation (think ecommerce sales, etc.) but with relatively light competition; though it may be apparent they are performing their own SEO efforts.

    I provided this service to a client recently that sold a set of software products to the medical industry. They had a previous “SEO” that put them in some pretty sticky spots, but it wasn’t anything that couldn’t be handled with a little elbow grease. I charged them just over $3500, and had the audit done in around 2 months. We also extended some of the consulting time for a few months while they fixed some of the more important errors.

    This was one of those cases where a few changes meant a lot of results. They had a strong site, so we just had to remove a lot of the chains holding them back. 3 months into this, and they are really impeding/out-ranking their competition. The rest of their strategy will be pure profit.

    Enterprise

    I can’t say much here. These are clients whose needs vary so greatly that no 2 audits look even remotely similar. Some clients have vast websites with major development requirements, some need an audit on their internal processes/policies and even one on the SEO services they provided to their clients.

    The very least I’ve ever charged was $5000, but they usually get to the $12000 – $15000 range. They can take anywhere from 2 to 3 months to complete, and usually involves regular consulting via phone/online meetings and a bit more training/education after the audit is complete and has been implemented.

  • Google To Offer Ranking Reports

    OK, that’s not entirely true. But they are giving us some decent information.

    I wanted to share a neat little bit of info after I read ‘The value of keyword rankings‘ over at State of Search. There has been (and likely will be for a while) a debate on the need to track keyword rankings. Some believe that it’s a moot point for reasons that regard the advent of various features added by Google (Personalized Search, Universal Search, AJAX SERPS, etc.) or the idea that keyword rankings aren’t as important as conversions and the end goal.

    While that sentiment isn’t exactly false, I still believe that keyword ranking reports have their place. And that place is in a toolbox for use by your SEO. Actually, with a few exceptions I don’t even show ranking reports to clients so much anymore, but I run them for every single one. I’ll explain why in another post, but for now, let’s look at something neat that Google is doing.

    I first heard about it from Matt Cutts on YouTube, and we have been using this information for some preliminary tracking. For some results, Google will provide a parameter declaring a search result ranking for a given keyword/phrase. So, you could use this information with your analytics software to determine not only what search terms brought visitors to your site, but where you rank for those terms.

    Keep in mind we aren’t seeing this for all results pages just yet, but you can catch it every once in a while (it seems to depend on the search, and I don’t know if it’s a specific type yet). Also, I’m going to show you how these ranking results are probably not what you’re used to seeing. Let’s look at an example first.

    So, do a search for something like ‘women’s shoes‘ in Google. You’ll get all the normal stuff; paid listings, organic results, etc.

    Now, would you kindly right click on the first result, and click ‘Properties?’You’ll get a pop-up with the properties of the link, including an ‘Address.’ Highlight that whole address:

    You can actually see what we are looking for from here, but for future reference you may want to paste the whole thing into notepad as you won’t see it all from this box most times.

    What we are looking for is the parameter cd=1. This tells us that this is the first listing on the page. Pretty neat, yes? This is what you would use with your analytics software, so get your Dev team cracking on this. Actually, don’t do that yet.

    Slight Change in Page One Rankings

    Let me show you what happens if we change the search a little. This time, look for ‘orlando hotels.’ You should see a local listing results box up top. Now, check that link’s properties. Aha! That’s number 1, again noted with the cd=1. And, if you look at the link for the first “natural” result, you will see cd=8.

    Wanna see something even cooler? Now search for ‘pacifica hotels.’ Now we have a result with sitelinks. I want you to look at the properties of that first sitelink. Remember when I said you have to paste this into notepad sometimes? This is one of those times. Because I’m a pretty cool guy, I’ll save you the trouble:

    There’s a difference here. Now we have an added resnum=1 along with a cd=1. This means that we have a first place block of listings, and we are looking at the first listing within that block. If you look at the last sitelink, you will see the same resnum=1 and a cd=8. The next listing, in the SERP? Well that will get a cd=2 with no resnum.

    So you can imagine that with a search that returns many results from various other verticals like images, maps, etc. these listing numbers can grow. It’s not as simple as saying “rank 1-10 means page 1.”

    Why Is This Important?

    Imagine you filter your analytics to show you not only the list of search terms that brought traffic, but also where they ranked in Google. Now, imagine that you are doing your diligence further by identifying the terms that produced conversion.

    Wouldn’t it be nice to have a clear understanding of these things? Say you have a traffic driver that is ranked number 2, but produces lower conversions than the term that is ranked number 9. You now have a new focus.

    Now, before you run off to get your SEO or development team working on this, I give you these words of caution. First, I haven’t even looked at other results like images, etc. I don’t know what if any parameters are used for stuff like that. Also, this is Google we are talking about. Anything could change or be dropped at any moment.
