Well, it was an interesting week. Seems everyone is at the SMX Advanced this week, so it was a little slow. I thought I would wrap up a few bits of news for a nice Friday informative. I haven’t been blogging a lot lately (seems less and less every week), but that’s just a sign that SEO Factor is doing well. Catch 22 I guess.

First, I should really apologize for not posting in a while. I’ve been super busy lates. I know that’s not an excuse, but it’s the truth. However, there are some great posts and happenings this week that I wanted to link to. I have a couple of posts coming next week, so there will be something good to read.

Mike Blumenthal noted on his blog, that Steve Espinosa noted on his blog (makes you wonder what we bloggers do all day, doesn’t it) that Google Maps is now allowing for the upload of videos.

Google Blogscoped reported today that, according to Google Trends:

“Apparently, people search for the word “Google” on Google more than they do for “music”, “movies”, “flowers”, even “sex”. And it’s happened in the last couple months.”

Hmmm…in the last couple of months.

With the recent uproar over Google’s request that people report paid text link purchasers, and the penalties that seem to be rolling over a large number of sites that buy and sell links, there’s a bit of fear out there for the site owners that take part in this method. I wanted to give a few tips on purchasing links, and a few things to keep in mind while considering to do so.

After my hotel reputation management post yesterday, I received a lot of emails about the subject, and how a hotelier goes about finding an Internet marketing firm for their hotel. I couldn’t answer some of those emails too directly, as there would be a conflict of interest, but I thought I would create a decent post to help you out.

It seems that almost every conversation I have about SEO with someone new to the idea includes some common questions. With answering these questions, I am then asked the exact same question, every time. “So, what sites do you read?” Well, let me tell you.

It’s not uncommon for SEOs and bloggers to share their RSS feeds or XML files to their readers. This indeed allows for the reader to make use of the ones they want to read, and use their desired RSS Reader.

I recently wrote an article for Skellie of Anywired.com on 7 Signs of SEO Scams. It was posted yesterday, and I would like to direct my readers to it. It was a post on SEO offers that should be noted as signs of a scam.

I wanted to post something this week about the prices we SEOs charge, and what you can expect to see as “the norm.” However, sometimes, you catch a few other posts that do the subject justice. So, I want to showcase 2 of those recent posts.

Don’t worry, I’m getting some information together for the SEO eBook for this subject, but for now, these are great reads.

Well, I’m a little sad today. As an SEO, if I’m not first met with complete unawareness of what it is I do, I’m labled a spammer by someone who happens to have had a bad experience with some “SEO Firm.” Usually, it doesn’t bother me too much, for when I get to talk to someone one-on-one, they realize I genuinely want to help. This has a lot to do with a background working as the “SEO” for a company that ripped people off, and I have a God’s promise to run my life differently now. But sometimes, someone I admire says something a little disheartening.

Today, I’m pretty upset. I read an article. I speak on an article on ‘Tech ‘Solutions’ Your Small Biz Can’t Use’ over at msnbc.com (there’s a little businessweek.com logo there, so it may have come from them). So what is it that made me angry?

In following Andrew Shotland on Giving SEO For Christmas, I wanted to give a link with a good anchor myself. The idea is to give a free link with a juicy anchor to a charity of your choice. It’s a great idea, it’s for a good cause, takes just a few moments of your time, and will keep on giving.

I openly ask that others join in. There are plenty of blogs out there with way more clout than myself and Andrew put together. By all means, leave a comment on his post to let him know he isn’t alone.

    Catch 22
Speaking of catch 22, Hugo guzman of Zeta Interactive wrote a neat post on The Ranking Report Catch 22: Part 1. This is always a tricky subject. As a business owner, it’s easier to justify an increase in rankings; so you would want to see a report giving you this information. As an SEO/SEM, I want to tell you I don’t care where your traffic comes from or about your rankings, as long as we can get quality traffic that will convert. It’s always a topic for SEOs, but honestly, why not just run the report, give the client what they want, and do what we do at the same time? Those reports don’t take a lot of errort or time. Still a good article.

    No English?
In usual Shimon Sandler form, he posted a great tactic for building foreign language keyword lists. This guy is probably one of my favorite SEO/SEMs out there. His posts are always great. If you do any work for clients outside of your country, give this post a good read.

    Google Gives It Up
At the SMX this week, Mike McDonald with WebProNews conducted an interview with Matt Cutts. During the video, Matt reveals that Google Help now offers information on NoFollow and its uses. You can read a ton of details at Matt’s post about the subject.

    Go Directly To UK Jail
In very interesting news, Sarah Bird over at SEOmoz gave us some detailed information on the New UK Law Criminalizing Stealth Marketing Techniques. It’s a lot to explain, so I suggest checking the post out yourself. It’s so interesting to me because I feel that this is a plight in the US as well. I know of a very successful company that makes use of one of these tactics almost exclusively.

    Decisions, Decisions
Finally, there seems to be a movement by a lot of my Twitter SEO friends to go to Plurk. This is a little disconserting. I don’t mind moving to Plurk or staying with Twitter either way. However, I don’t get to spend much time on just one, I really hope there isn’t some big split. Mark O’Neill with NowSourcing has a pretty nice coverage of the Plurk system. Sigh…here’s my Twitter account, and here’s my Plurk account. Someone just keep me in the loop on what everyone chooses.

Well, that’s it for now. I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

With this, and any other post, please read the disclaimer.

As SEO Factor is concerned, I haven’t really taken the business aspect seriously. SEO Factor started as just a blog to share a little information to a small group of people. Over the years, business owners would often contact me for services. Though I was all to happy to accommodate, I never sought new business. Over the last few years, I’ve been contacted more and more, and so as increased my desire to take SEO Factor to the next level.

Shimon Sandler wrote an interesting article on CEO Bloggers and whether or not they should clear their posts throught their legal department that got me thinking about my current situation with company blogs. I love to push the idea of a blog to my clients, but with a strong air of caution. I’m also in a constant uphill battle with an agency I work for to either take their blog seriously, or remove it all together. I thought this would be a great time to go over some of the reasons not to start a blog.

I saw an interesting story on the news today here in Jacksonville, FL. The story was relating to the website ratemycop.com, and its validity in the eyes of the resedents here in the city.

With a massive poll of 2 people, WJXT Jacksonville returned the results. Half of the 2 people said they would use the site as a means of both investigating a police officer, and as a way to contribute experiences. The other half of the 2 people stated that they would take any information on the site with a grain of salt.

Today’s post is from a guest, Brenton Crozier. He is a freelance copywriter with whom I work closely on many projects. I asked him to give me something to help promote his new website, and he was all too happy to oblige. Thanks, Brenton!

Today I thought it a good idea to write a post meant to get the brain juices flowing more than a strict SEO technique. Sometimes it’s nice to think aloud without holding back on your ideas just to get to the good little nuggets tucked away in your own brain.

I mentioned in my last post that I had a story about reputation management. This one is a story about 2 hotels. One charges a lot less than the other, but learns that price is not the only thing people want.

Today you hear a lot about reputation montioring as a service, but I want to stress that there’s a little more to it. You need to act on the things that impact your business’ perception online. So, let’s start our story.

Social media is big talk these days. From news stories about the amount of money a social media site is “worth,” to firms scurrying to offer “social media services,” it’s difficult to turn your computer on without seeing or hearing something. But honestly, how do you test the power?
