« To SEO or Not To SEO? There Is No Question – Email Marketing Resources » 31 May 2007

There is nothing more exciting (or more scary) in blog writing than having your blog viewed by some big names in the industry. Checking your stats every morning and night, though very motivating, only gives you a bunch of numbers. You never really know who is actually looking at your site. Until now….sorta.

If you look over to the right on the sidebar, you will see a little box from MyBlogLog, a service allowing bloggers to connect, and keep track of who visits your site. A closer look shows me who has been here recently. It will only show the visitors that also have a MyBlogLog account, but that’s a pretty large number.

Wow, Lee Odden from Search Marketing Blog, Kid Disco (CK Chung) from SEO Disco, and Joe Balestrino from Mr. SEO. Now that’s really cool. These guys have achieved the success in the industry that we freelancers and firms (well…the firms should) strive for.

But this brings a point to light. You never know who will be looking at your site or blog. The only reason I know these guys did is because they are members of MyBlogLog, and have happened to, likely in a drunken stuper, stumble onto my site. That being said, it’s probably a good idea to be sure you are providing something of value to the community; be it the unknowing crowd, or the professionals. It would really hurt my reputation if I were giving a bunch of misleading information, and any one of these gentlemen or hundreds of other prestigious SEO’s decided to bring it to light. Sure, I might still get the occassional job from someone who had never heard of SEO, but that would put me in the same basket as the snake oil “SEO” salesmen. And I don’t know anybody that wants that.

Now, click on the links to their sites repeatedly so it looks like I’m sending them traffic. Pair that with the “These guys have achieved the success in the industry that we freelancers and firms (well…the firms should) strive for…” in the previous paragraph, and maybe one of them will say “Hi” from their blog.

  • Example of a Google Penalty » SEO Factor

    « SEO Factor’s New Slogan – SEOMoz Is A Scam!! » 11 June 2007

Rand posted today on How to Handle a Google Penalty, and an Example. This is a great explanation on not only what causes a penalty, but more importantly how to distinguish if you are indeed being penalized. Rand gives a real world example using the real estate industry, and the devaluing of reciprocal links in May.

And, as an added bonus, Rand provides us with his usual artistic abilities in the form of a nice flowchart to determine whether or not your site is being penalized, or you are just losing rankings because of other factors (like the devaluing of links or strengthening competition).

Sigh…I’ve made a mistake. I wanted to run through the Text-Links-Ads.com service, and figured “hey, I’ll just put it up on my site. It’s not like I have an issue with promoting other SEO’s or blogs. So why not?” Well, I’ll tell you why not.

Book Review – SEO: An Hour A Day

    7 May 2007

I have always hated books with the “An hour a day,” or “in 24 hours” in the title. Being so nerdy and technical in nature, I sometimes cower in the presence of something too simply explained. However, this wasn’t the case with “SEO: An Hour A Day” written by Gradiva Couzin and Jennifer Grappone. The […]

This was an odd week. We signed on a client that we had a very long time ago, and are looking at a day of consulting for a local paper’s site. There will be more on this to come. Let’s take a walk together down the short memory lane, shall we?

November 3, 2006 I can’t express how many times the ‘SEO / Flash’ subject has come up. It’s a very valid issue, and carries a lot of debate. The problem with Flash is the inability for the SE’s to read the text in the movie or animation. Well, there is a way to make this better.

Here is an article on the whole subject at SEO Consultants that explains the process in detail, but basically you are recreating the Flash subject matter in a readable HTML form with the help of JavaScript. The first couple of ideas for this is really for the words in the Flash document for navigation or the page content for a bit.

I was thinking that it would likely be best for those all-Flash sites out there, to completely recreate the whole site in this fashion, with look and feel and all. This method would require a bit of work, but the benefits would be well worth it. SE’s aside, if a visitor gets to your site and can not see the Flash for whatever reason, even small accommodation may not be good enough. It would be nice for them to have the pleasure of a full fledged website to view and take advantage of.

So check the link out. SEO Factor will be working a few sites in the near future with this method implemented. We will let you know how it goes.

February 6, 2007 Ok, so we all know how important IBL’s are for ranking in Google. I’ve gone over the importance and what factors are taken into account, but one of the most frustrating thing was the idea that you never really had an idea at how many links you were getting credit for from Google. The ‘link:site’ operator was never all inclusive because of the metric’s weight in determining your ranking. Well….Google will now let you, and only you, see this information. So long as you can prove you own the site with Google’s ‘Webmaster Tools.’

    More here.

This is incredible news. This should help us all understand a bit more on how Google determines where you stand. But also keep in mind that this is new, and as such, will not be void of inconsistencies or errors. But again, and excellent step forward in understanding how the Big G works.

October 9, 2006 Google filed for a patent recently that would allow for algorithmic ranking, along with the efforts of human editing. This would mean that the build of the work in determining ranking and results would rest with a computer, but would be helped with the integration of editorial opinion. You can read the patent details here. So, what does this mean? This means that there is a chance that a human will make a piece of the decision on how relevant or beneficial a site would be in reference to it’s visibility online. So it would be a good idea to make sure that your sites are indeed built for the human. This shouldn’t be anything new, but will help to re enforce what is considered acceptable SEO practice. Sites shouldn’t really be built for the search engines, but for the end user/visitor/buyer. Even as a consultant, I often tell my clients that we will not be optimizing a site for the search engines as my title implies, but optimizing a site to show the search engines what the site is all about. When you concentrate on the search engines, you neglect what is really important, and what the site was created for in the first place, the customer. This patent will force that along because there will be a person looking at your site and giving an opinion on how important the site is to the online community, how relevant it is to it’s desired search terms, and whether or not it will be considered an authoritative source of information or services. So if you’re creating a site for the algorithmic machine, then you’re probably going to be disappointed when someone at Google looks at your site with destain and sends it to the bottom of the list.

However. Just because a search engine submits for a patent, it doesn’t mean that they will implement any of the changes. These are public records, and could very well be a ‘Art of War’ kind of situation. Smoke and Mirrors. Illusions of the mind. Either way, the same rule holds true. Make a nice site, for your customers. Not some stupid robot.
