  • Don’t Just Delete Your Comment Spam » SEO Factor

    « Rand Fishkin is Oprah – 9 October 2007

As your blog grows, so will your comments (hopefully), and in turn, so will your comment spam. There are plenty of great tools out there that help combat this, but before you blindly remove spam, take a look at it.

If you look at some of the comments on my post plugging Shylock,  you will see that they were blatant attempts at getting a link. One wanted to have a link to his or her site with search terms that happened to compliment my site. So, instead of just deleting it, I stripped the URL, and kept the comment. Thus giving me a tad bit more content within the post, containing some search terms.

Now, this probably isn’t conducive to some of those blogs that get thousands of spam comments, but I only get about 15 a day. It’s not a large chunk of my time to glance over them.

  • Beginning SEO Podcast by Lee Odden » SEO Factor

    « 301 Redirect Those Old URL’s – Free Social Marketing Idea » 30 May 2007

Lee Odden over at the Online Marketing Blog will be recording a Beginning SEO Podcast tonight with David Brown and Brian Mark. Seeing how the majority of this blog is geared toward the budding SEO or new site owner, I thought it would be a good idea to spread the news of the coming podcast.

Lee states that he doesn’t know what they are going to talk about, but his is of the top blogs that I read, so a lot of trust is easy to give.

I’ll let you know when the podcast is up and ready (obviously with my 2 cents).

  • Example of a Google Penalty » SEO Factor

    « SEO Factor’s New Slogan – SEOMoz Is A Scam!! » 11 June 2007

Rand posted today on How to Handle a Google Penalty, and an Example. This is a great explanation on not only what causes a penalty, but more importantly how to distinguish if you are indeed being penalized. Rand gives a real world example using the real estate industry, and the devaluing of reciprocal links in May.

And, as an added bonus, Rand provides us with his usual artistic abilities in the form of a nice flowchart to determine whether or not your site is being penalized, or you are just losing rankings because of other factors (like the devaluing of links or strengthening competition).
